The Charlatans’ ‘Tellin Stories’ gets documentary release

album tellin storiesThe story of The Charlatans‘ 1997 album ‘Tellin Stories‘ will be told in a new film next year.

Released on DVD in March 2013, Mountain Picnic Blues is to include interviews with the Manchester band as they look back at the album which delivered the strongest commercial performance of their career thanks to genuine hit singles such as ‘North Country Boy‘ and ‘One To Another‘.

As always seems to be the case with The Charlatans, that success was tinged with tragedy after keyboard player Rob Collins‘ death in a car crash shortly before the recording sessions were completed.

Bass player Martin Blunt has reflected on the group’s spot supporting Oasis at the mammoth, era-defining Knebworth gigs which arrived the summer before ‘Tellin Stories’ release, recalling to NME:

“We stayed about 30 miles out from Knebworth and I just remember we arrived in a helicopter, thinking, ‘This is all getting a bit surreal,’ you know. I’d never been in a helicopter before. A lot of the press came running down to our helicopter thinking Oasis had arrived.”
