Stars from the music world have been paying tribute to Ravi Shankar after the hugely talented musician died on December 11th at the age of 92.

Best known for his major influence on the second part of The Beatles‘ career – especially George Harrison – which introduced his now legendary Sitar playing to Western culture, Shankar’s impact on musicians of all ages has been reflected by the number of tributes being paid to the ‘Godfather Of World Music’.

In a statement, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr said the news was, “A great loss musically, spiritually and physically. God bless to Ravi’s family,” while former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash wrote on Twitter: “Sad day; spiritual, cultural & music legend.”

“My Dad’s music touched millions of people,” Norah Jones has said in her statement. “He will be greatly missed by me and music lovers everywhere.” The Who, Peter Frampton and Joe Bonamassa are just some of the many other musicians to offer their tributes to Shankar on Twitter.

It has also been revealed Shankar is to be awarded a posthumous Lifetime Achievement award at next year’s Grammys, an honour he had been made aware of before his death. “Just last week, I had the honour to inform him that he would receive a 2013 Lifetime Achievement this February,” Record Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow has said.

“He was deeply touched and so pleased, that he extended a gracious and personal invitation to visit with him at his home. We have lost an innovative and exceptional talent and a true ambassador of international music. Our thoughts and sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and all of those around the world who were inspired by his music and compassionate philanthropy.”
