Sir Paul McCartney will join former Nirvana bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic onstage at tonight’s (December 12th) Superstorm Sandy benefit concert in New York, reports The Sun.

The tabloid quotes Sir Paul as saying he was invited to rehearse with the pair by Dave Grohl, but failed to grasp the significance of the phone-call until much later.

“I phoned Dave and he invited me to come over and jam with some mates,” he is quoted as saying.

“I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said, ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’. And somebody whispered to me, ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt’. I couldn’t believe it.”

Tonight’s concert in New York will be treated to performances by some of the biggest names in the music world, including Bruce Springsteen, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters and Kanye West.
