Hillsborough benefit single now well on course for Christmas Number One

jc11The single released to raise money for the legal costs being incurred by the families of the victims of the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster as they continue their fight for justice is now well on course to become this year’s UK Christmas Number One.

Despite James Arthur, the latest warbler to splatter off the X Factor conveyer belt, taking an early lead in the race on Monday, The Justice Collective‘s ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother‘ edged ahead yesterday, and has now extended its lead today (December 20th) with new stats showing a gap of 14,000 copies between the two singles thanks to sales of 146,000.

“This really is the closest No.1 battle we can remember – even closer than the legendary 2009 battle between Rage Against the Machine and Joe McElderry,” the Official Charts Company’s Martin Talbot remarked yesterday.

“The poll concludes at midnight on Saturday night, so there is a long way to go yet – but this one looks like going down to the wire.”
