Of course Menswear’s debut album ‘Nuisance’ didn’t go platinum

Stop everything.

It seems Menswear‘s Britpop bothering debut album ‘Nuisance‘ hasn’t gone platinum after all.

A story was widely circulated yesterday claiming the band’s 1995 effort, which peaked at #11 on the UK charts, had finally shifted 300,000 copies in the UK and been certified platinum by the BPI after ex-guitarist Chris Gentry posted a picture of him holding a commemorative disc on Twitter with the message:

“‘Nuisance’ by Menswe@r goes WW Platinum. Thx to everyone who made it possible.”

However, gossip website Holy Moly is now reporting the story to be surprisingly nothing more than a joke on the part of Gentry, who in fact purchased his special disc from eBay. The site also claims lead singer Johnny Dean failed to see the funny side of the ‘hoax’, and was more interested in the whereabouts of his missing royalties.

Former Menswear drummer and current BBC 6Music presenter Matt Everitt had expressed his skepticism at the reports yesterday, telling NME:

“To be honest, the idea that ‘Nuisance’ had sold 300,000 copies worldwide seems rather suspect to me, but Twitter appears to be very keen on the idea, so who am I to argue? Although now I come to think of it, my annual royalty cheques (approximately £83) would suggest something is amiss here.”
