Facebook campaign aims to put ‘Fairytale Of New York’ at number one on 25th anniversary

Since Rage Against The Machine‘s stunning rise to the UK’s Christmas Number One back in 2009, Facebook campaigns have become as frequent as the singles themselves, and now one of the most enduringly popular festive anthems has become the subject of its own Facebook-led assault on the charts.

The Pogues‘ single ‘Fairytale Of New York‘, which originally placed behind the Pet Shop Boys at #2 back in 1987, is the new bookies’ favourite for next month’s Christmas Number One after a Facebook campaign was launched to push the track to the summit to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The song is available on iTunes at this link.

Despite Simon Cowell’s dominance of the traditional number one during recent years, it is being rumoured the 2012 X Factor winner will not compete for the top spot in December, though this is yet to be officially confirmed by producers.

Competition is also likely to come from The Justice Collective, an initiative which includes musicians such as Sir Paul McCartney, Paloma Faith and former Clash guitarist Mick Jones who have recorded a version of The Hollies‘ ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother‘ with the aim of raising funds for the legal costs being incurred by the families of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster..
