R.E.M have issued a ‘cease and desist’ letter to Fox News after the network used the band’s 1991 track ‘Losing My Religion‘ during its coverage of the recent Democratic National Convention.

The now-defunct US group’s frontman Michael Stipe has said they have “…”little or no respect for their puff adder brand of reportage. Our music does not belong there,” while a statement on R.E.M’s official website elaborates:

“REM’s ‘Losing My Religion’ was used in the Fox News coverage of the Democratic National Convention last night. REM today, through its music publisher, Warner-Tamerlane Music, demanded that Fox News cease and desist from continuing its unlicensed and unauthorized use of the song.”

R.E.M confirmed their decision to split almost a year ago after a hugely successful career which spanned over three decades. Shortly after, Michael Stipe insisted they have no plans to reform at any stage in the future during a retrospective interview on the BBC’s Newsnight programme.
