Coldplay pipped the likes of The Black Keys and Jack White to come out on top in the specialist rock category at last night’s (September 6th) MTV Video Music Awards, which were held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Coldplay were the winners in the Best Rock Video section, with their promo for the UK number one single ‘Paradise‘ beating The Black Keys’ ‘Lonely Boy‘ – whose video features Derrick T. Tuggle dancing along in a unique way to the track – and Jack White, who was nominated for his solo single ‘Sixteen Saltines‘. Imagine Dragons and Linkin Park were also nominated in the category.

Coldplay did miss out on two others awards they were nominated for however, with M.I.A landing both Best Direction and Best Cinematography In A Video ahead of the British band.

Selected winners:

Best Rock Video
Coldplay — ‘Paradise’

Best Direction in a Video
M.I.A. — ‘Bad Girls’ (Director: Romain Gavras)

Best Cinematography in a Video
M.I.A. — ‘Bad Girls’ (Director of Photography: André Chemetoff)
