Rihanna has lowest selling UK number one album ‘in recorded history’

51cPiLCi79L. SL500 AA300Popstar Rihanna claimed the number one spot on the UK Album Chart yesterday (August 12th) with the lowest amount of sales since Millward Brown began collecting data for the Official Charts Company in 1994, reports Music Week.

According to the figures, Rihanna’s album ‘Talk That Talk‘ sold just 9,578 copies to move back to the summit of the UK charts, undercutting the previous ‘record’ which was credited to Emile Sande‘s ‘Our Version Of Events‘ LP after it sold 13,430 units for no.1 11 weeks ago.

The news is another example of the trend for declining album sales in the UK, despite the sharp increase in the digital market, after the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) recently reported a drop of nearly 7 million sales during the first half of 2012 when compared to the same period last year.

The figures released early last month showed 43.6 million albums being shifted during the first portion of 2012, compared with 50.5 million in 2011, thanks largely to Adele‘s runaway success ‘21‘.
