Pink Floyd have moved to deny claims made by British popstar Ed Sheeran that he has been asked to perform with the legendary band at the London Olympics’ closing ceremony later this month.

Sheeran made the surprise admission to Australian radio station Nova, telling them that the pair are set to perform the 1975 classic ‘Wish You Were Here‘ at the ceremony, raising the prospect of a first major live performance from the surviving members of Pink Floyd since the Live 8 series of concerts in 2005.

However, NME now reports a statement has been quickly released to quash the rumours, which abruptly reads: “In response to press speculation, Pink Floyd state that the band is NOT performing at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.”

British groups who have agreed to perform at the closing ceremony inside the London Olympic Stadium are reported to include the Kaiser Chiefs and Beady Eye, who will air a re-worked version of the Oasis single ‘Wonderwall‘.
