Carl Barat has revealed The Libertines turned down an invitation to perform live at yesterday’s London Olympics closing ceremony.

Writing on Twitter last night (August 12th), Barat simply said the group decided they ‘couldn’t do it’ when asked by organisers to join a clutch of other British bands at the ceremony.

“That was a closing party,” he wrote. “Olympics. Libertines got asked, couldn’t do it.” And after Barat received some abuse for the decision, he later added: “All this vexation for me? Cheers. No-one actually understanding why we couldn’t do it.”

Hopes of a return for The Libertines following their short run of 2010 summer reunion festival and headline gigs were raised last week after Pete Doherty told online TV show Hernu & Harris he and Barat are planning on visit Thailand in the near future to ‘do some writing’.

“I spoke to Carl last night and he’s going to come out to Paris tomorrow and maybe we’ll go back out to Thailand together and do some writing,” he said.
