Manic Street Preachers confirm offer to perform at London Olympics

Manic Street Preachers have revealed they will be unable to appear at the London Olympic Games’ closing ceremony next month after a list of acts apparently drawn up by organisers was leaked to the media yesterday (July 16th).

The Manics were just one of several bands and singers who had seemingly been approached to perform at the closing ceremony in August, with the likes of Take That, The Who and Elbow also on the list.

And the Welsh band have now added some validity to those rumours by writing on Facebook that they will be unable to take up the offer of an appearance in London due to other touring commitments.

“Seen rumours of MSP playing the Olympic closing ceremony,” the message says. “To confirm, we were offered but declined. Shame because I truly love the Olympics – the sport that is not all this other nonsense – the offer was weeks ago, we’ll now be in S. Korea.”

The list suggested Liam Gallagher would be approached if the Manic Street Preachers couldn’t make it, though the former Oasis and current Beady Eye frontman has yet comment on the speculation, while organising committee Locog have also refused to confirm the reports.
