Happy Mondays to record new album

Reformed Manchester band the Happy Mondays will record a new album after a successful UK comeback tour earlier this year, the group’s manager has confirmed.

The ‘classic’ Mondays line-up announced their return in January, with frontman Shaun Ryder initially ruling out the prospect of working on a new record, telling XFM that: “Pop songs – or whatever you want to call them – are written by young people and when you’re young those songs are easy to write. If you look at any great artist once they go past late 30s the songs, they just aren’t there.”

However, the May UK tour, when they were supported by fellow Madchester luminaries the Inspiral Carpets, appears to have brought about a change of heart for the band, and their manager Warren Askew has now told NME they are preparing to begin work on what would be the re-formed line-up’s first album since 1992’s much-troubled, drug fuelled ‘Yes Please!‘.

“Yes, we are now planning to record a new album, after the success of the tour and with the band all getting on so well,” Askew has said. “Shaun has been writing and the band have been getting together in the studio putting ideas down. I’m sure it will be a great Happy Mondays album.”
