The Prodigy and Slash are set to headline the first day of this year’s Download festival tonight (June 8th).

The Prodigy’s third appearance at the festival will also mark their maiden headline spot on the main stage, while Slash will be promoting his recent solo album ‘Apocalyptic Love‘ with a headline performance on the event’s Zippo Encore stage.

2012 will see Download celebrating its 10th anniversary, with organiser Andy Copping telling NME of the landmark year: “You want to be around forever. To get where we are now is an unbelievable achievement. 10 years in and having the biggest festival we’ve ever done, the biggest attended, the strongest line-up, is amazing.”

Metallica are due to follow The Prodigy as main stage headliners tomorrow night, while the recently reformed Black Sabbath will close the festival on Sunday with the sole surviving major gig of their planned European tour, which was largely postponed following guitarist Tony Iommi‘s cancer diagnosis earlier this year.
