The Hives frontman ‘Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist has claimed current rock n roll music has been ‘pretty shit’ for a long time in an interview with The Guardian.

“I feel like for a very, very long time it has been pretty shit,” he told the paper.

“There’s always good stuff if you scratch the surface. But if you look at the nominees for best rock Grammy, there hasn’t been a rock band there for 10 years. It’s all pop bands with distorted guitars.”

Almqvist was also dismissive of emo bands, describing the scene as simply ‘people constantly whining’. “It claims to be rock’n’roll but it’s people constantly whining,” he continued.

“Rock’n’roll is 50 drunk people in a room who want to have fun, but there’s something extremely unsexy about it being perverted into middle-class guilt and whining. We like our rock’n’roll sexual.”

The Hives will release their new album ‘Lex Hives‘ – the first since 2007’s ‘Black and White Hives‘ – on June 5th.
