Sir Paul McCartney has moved up to third place on the Sunday Times’ annual list of the Top 50 Music Millionaires in Britain and Ireland.

The former Beatles legend has seen his fortune increase by £170m in the past year, leading to a total of £665 million. McCartney’s personal wealth is now only out-weighed by theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh, who has worked on hugely popular musicals such as Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, and record executive Clive Calder.

U2 make the top 5 with a not-inconsiderable combined fortune of £514 million, while Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger is in joint tenth place with Spotify founder Daniel Ek. Coldplay‘s Chris Martin and his wife Gwyneth Paltrow move into the list of Britain’s 1,000 richest people thanks to a wealth of £72 million.

The list is compiled using figures derived from what is described as ‘identifiable wealth’ – which includes assets such as land and property, as well as other revenue streams such as shares in publicly quoted companies.

The full Sunday Times Rich List will be published this weekend.
