Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced company has acquired the rights to Robert Greenfield’s Exile on Main Street: A Season in Hell With The Rolling Stones and will now begin to develop a film based on the 2008 book, reports Deadline Hollywood.

According to the website, the movie will concentrate primarily on the relationship between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards during the famously hedonistic recording of the landmark 1972 album, when the Stones decamped to Nellcôte in the South of France.

Virgin Produced, City Entertainment and KippSter Entertainment are said to be developing the project internally, with Brandon and Phil Murphy set to write the screenplay.

The news comes amid a series of special projects being initiated to celebrate The Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary. As previously reported on Live4ever, these include a new Brett Morgen-directed biopic, which is due for release in September and will feature rare footage of the band dating back to 1963.

“For anyone who wants to experience the band, this is the film that will defy convention and create a sonic tapestry to transport viewers into the world of the Rolling Stones,” Morgen has said. “The film will deliver the original, bold, sexy and dangerous flavor of the iconic rock band.”
