Bob Dylan is to be awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his services to the United States.

Dylan is one of 13 people to be awarded the US’ highest civilian honour for his ‘significant impact’ on American culture during his long career.

“These extraordinary honorees come from different backgrounds and different walks of life, but each of them has made a lasting contribution to the life of our Nation,” President Barack Obama said when announcing those who will be honoured this year.

“They’ve challenged us, they’ve inspired us, and they’ve made the world a better place. I look forward to recognising them with this award.”

Dylan will be presented with the prestigious award at the White House in the late Spring. Other recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year will include Madeleine Albright, the first female Secretary of State, physician and epidemiologist William Foege and astronaut John Glenn, who was the first American to orbit the Earth.
