Keane admit their last album was ‘self indulgent’

Keane have said they are looking to return to the formula of their first two full-length studio albums after admitting 2008’s ‘Perfect Symmetry‘ was at times ‘too self indulgent’.

“We felt that ‘Perfect Symmetry’ was pretty sprawling, a little bit self-indulgent in places,” singer Tom Chaplin told XFM. “Certainly sonically – we referenced Bowie, Talking Heads, those kind of bands, which was quite an unusual step for us.”

Instead, Chaplin revealed Keane focused on getting back to having an album packed with single contenders when working on new material, something he believes was a feature of their first two LPs.

“With this record, we felt we wanted to get back to having a problem with choosing singles,” he continued. “Like being stuck with 10 or 12 real single contenders from the album. We’ve had a lot of headaches over which song we should release first!”

Keane will release the new album ‘Strangeland‘ on May 7th. It will be supported with a UK tour that month, kicking off at the Newcastle O2 Academy on May 23rd.
