The music world has been paying tribute to Monkees frontman Davy Jones, who died yesterday at the age of 66.

The singer’s sad passing was confirmed by his publicist on February 29th, who revealed he had died of a massive heart attack in his sleep.

Speaking at last night’s NME Awards, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr paid tribute to Jones, who was also a native of Manchester: “There are a lot of musicians who have passed away who people don’t remember. He was from Manchester as well and he looked good and had good hair.”

“I think there’s something infectious about guys looking like that and having fun,” reflected Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson. “The tunes, you can’t argue with them.”

Meanwhile, in a statement released yesterday, Monkees bass player Peter Tork spoke of his immense sadness at the news. “It is with great sadness that I reflect on the sudden passing of my long-time friend and fellow-adventurer, David Jones,” he said.

“His talent will be much missed. His gifts will be with us always.”
