Lana Del Rey has enjoyed the UK’s biggest first week sales of the year so far after going straight to number one yesterday with ‘Born To Die‘.

The singer beat Leonard Cohen‘s Old Ideas‘ to the top spot on Sunday (February 5th), and in doing so accumulated sales figures of over 117,000 – making her debut record the fastest selling of 2012 to date.

Meanwhile, it has also be revealed today that the UK’s recording artists enjoyed their best sales figures since 1996 during the course of 2011, thanks in no small part to the runaway success of Adele‘s ‘21‘.

The London Evening Standard reports UK acts accounted for 52% of overall album sales last year, the best since the likes of Oasis and The Spice Girls led the charge for Brit acts in 1996. By contrast, imported artists from the US made up 32% of all sales in the UK, the lowest contribution from the United States since 1999.
