Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody has praised the impact of Nirvana after the band performed in Northern Ireland with The Breeders back in the early Nineties.

During in an interview with Metro, Lightbody revealed his first gig was the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1991, and also explained how another of his early gig-going experiences in the presence of Nirvana had first inspired him to start a band.

“The Red Hot Chili Peppers supported by Rollins Band in Belfast’s Ulster Hall in 1991,” he said. “My second was Nirvana supported by The Breeders. That’s a lineup that hasn’t been topped.”

“Nirvana became a massive part of my life and kick-started my desire to be in a band. People thought Northern Ireland was a scary place at the time, so any band who played Belfast before the ceasefire we ended up loving forever.”

Snow Patrol are currently on tour in the UK in support of their 2011 album ‘Fallen Empires‘, and are due to play the second of three dates at the Belfast Odyssey Arena tonight (January 24th).
