Sharp decline in UK album sales during 2011

adeleSales of albums in the UK dropped by 6% in the UK last year when compared to 2010 figures, it has been revealed.

The huge success of Adele‘s second record ‘21‘ has given a much needed boost to the album market over the past twelve months, but that hasn’t been enough to halt the downward trend in sales of recent years, something which BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor has blamed on the UK’s failure to deal with piracy.

“While other countries take positive steps to protect their creative sector, our Government is taking too long to act on piracy, while weakening copyright to the benefit of US tech giants,” he said.

“The UK has already fallen behind Germany as a music market. Unless decisive action is taken in 2012, investment in music could fall again – a creative crunch that will destroy jobs and mean the next Adele may not get her chance to shine on the world stage.”

BPI figures show CD album sales of 86.2 million during 2011.
