Fiction Records’ Jim Chancellor has said record labels are ‘scared’ of signing new guitar-based bands due to the lack of mainstream success being experienced by many of today’s emerging rock acts.

BBC Newsbeat quotes Chancellor, whose company houses the likes of Elbow and Snow Patrol, as saying his fellow labels are avoiding the rock genre because ‘not much of it is succeeding’.

“The problem is everyone is looking for instant results from a new signing,” he has said. “What we’ve tried to do at Fiction is help bands through those phases. We try and nurture talent. Television is very limited. For guitar bands it’s Channel 4 and Later…With Jools Holland. There are very few other outlets.”

According to figures published by BBC Newsbeat, the top two selling rock albums of 2011 both came from established industry figures – Coldplay and Noel Gallagher – with only The Vaccines making the top 35 best sellers of the last year from the current crop of brand new guitar led artists.
