The Happy Mondays have confirmed their rumoured reunion, reports The Quietus.

The respected website quotes a press statement released to promoters today which reads: “The rumours are true… Happy Mondays, the seminal Manchester band who changed musical culture forever has reformed and will be available for select live gigs across 2012.”

The statement doesn’t shed any light on the make-up of the reformed line-up, but if the finer details of the earlier rumours are also proved to be correct, the news means the classic Mondays collective consisting of Shaun Ryder, Paul Ryder, Bez, Mark Day, Paul Davis and Rowetta Satchell will be working together for the first time since a second split in 2000.

Whispers of a possible return for the Manchester band were led by The Sun newspaper last month, who quoted a source as citing the success of The Stone Roses‘ unlikely reconciliation as an inspiration for Shaun Ryder and co.

“After the success of The Stone Roses reunion, there’s a real clamour to get the group back on the road and document it properly,” the source said. “Shaun and his brother Paul have a notoriously patchy relationship but they’re willing to sort things out for the sake of the band.”
