Glastonbury may use electronic wristbands in 2013

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has said he is considering introducing a new electronic wristband system to his festival after the design proved to be a success in Europe.

Eavis told BBC Newsbeat electronic wristbands ‘seems like an incredible system’, and added: “It does look as though it’s something better than what we’re doing at the moment and I might be tempted to use it.”

The wristbands aim to curb touting and fraud by tracking its owners via an electronic chip, and Eavis has admitted that while he is considering the innovation, he is worried about the privacy implications. “All the commercial implications of the chip are slightly worrying aren’t they?” he added. “I don’t want to take people into a land they don’t want to go into. And using information about people, I wouldn’t be happy about that.”

Glastonbury is due to take a break this summer, but plans are apparently in full flow for 2013, with Eavis insisting last week next year’s headliners are ‘already sorted’.
