Footage of David Bowie performing on Top Of The Pops, which until just last week was thought to have been lost forever, will be aired on the BBC tonight.
The video which was recently unearthed sees Bowie performing his legendary track ‘The Jean Genie‘ in the mid-70s during the peak of TOTP’s influence and popularity. It will be shown tonight (December 21st) on BBC 2 as part of the Top Of The Pops Christmas Special.
“Bowie singing ‘The Jean Genie’ is electric and the kind of piece of archive that not only brings back how brilliant Top Of The Pops could be, but also how a piece of archive can speak to us down the years,” executive producer of Top Of The Pops 2 Mark Cooper told BBC News.
Bowie’s performance was unearthed when retired TV cameraman John Henshall recently let it be known that he owned a copy of the much sought after programme.
