Guns n Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been announced as the newest inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

The two US bands will be joined by The Beastie Boys at the ceremony, and the news is likely to intensify rumours that the classic Guns n Roses line-up – Axl Rose, Slash and all – could be ready to reunite on stage to celebrate the honour.

Artists and bands who released their first single in 1986 or earlier were eligible for the 2012 award, and the likes of Donovan and The Cure are amongst those who have missed out this year.

“The 2012 nominees embody the broad scope of what ‘rock & roll’ means,” said Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation when the original shortlist was announced last September.

“From vocal groups to hip-hop, from singer-songwriters to hard rocking artists, this group represents the spirit of what we celebrate at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

The new inductees will be formally unveiled at a ceremony on April 14th, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio.
