Franz Ferdinand have announced their first festival appearance of 2012 amid suggestions they will also begin work on a new album next year.

The band have taken a lengthy break from music since the release of ‘Tonight: Franz Ferdinand‘ in 2009, and haven’t played live in the UK for the best part of two years. However, they have now been confirmed on the line-up for the 2012 Primavera Sound festival, which is to be held from May 30th-June 3rd in Barcelona, Spain.

Last month, the band’s guitarist Nick McCarthy revealed to the Daily Record newspaper that Franz Ferdinand are now once again making future plans after a putting their feet up for a good while following a spate of relentless recording and gigging over recent years.

“We’re thinking of doing something again after a bit of a sabbatical,” he said. “We’d toured to excess and needed to enjoy playing again. It is going really well.”

Franz Ferdinand were catapulted to the forefront of the so-called ‘New Rock Revolution’ of the first half of the last decade when their self-titled debut album won the Mercury Music Prize in 2004.
