Michael Stipe Insists REM Will Never Reunite

Former REM frontman Michael Stipe has insisted the now defunct band will never reunite.

Stipe made the comments during an appearance on BBC Two‘s Newsnight programme, whose presenter Gavin Esler asked whether the US legends would ever get back together.

“We’re not,” Stipe replied, before adding, “It won’t. It’s done,” when pressed further by Esler.

REM announced their decision to split after nearly three decades together last September, with all three members releasing emotional statements to their official website.

Ex-bass player Mike Mills, who appeared with Stipe on Newsnight, has previously stated his belief that his former bandmate will now pursue projects away from music.

“I don’t think that music is where his passion lies,” he told Mojo magazine. “I think he wants to be in the visual arts. I imagine Michael will do a lot of sculpture and photography. I think those are his big interests now.”

REM released their fifteenth and ultimately final album ‘Collapse Into Now‘ back in March.
