Kasabian: ‘We’re Not Anything Like Oasis’

Kasabian have dismissed suggestions they will be the band to fill the void left by Oasis, saying they are ‘not anything like’ their idols.

Kasabian have made no secret of their admiration for Liam and Noel Gallagher over recent years, and toured with the band on several occasions following the release of their debut album in 2004.

And now, with the band progressing on to headline status themselves, comparisons with Oasis are often made, and many are tipping Tom Meighan, Serge Pizzorno and co to provide the same era-defining concerts which were such an important part of the Oasis story.

However, Meighan has said that while he feels the two bands share the same love for rock n roll, they are in fact two very different groups, and Kasabian will not match the status once afforded to Oasis, who he describes as a ‘one-off’.

“Maybe we’ve got the same spirit as them, but we’re a different band,” Meighan told Shortlist. “They were one-offs. A phenomenon.”

“We’re not anything like them. It’s an honour to be compared to them, because Noel and Liam are why we’re here, but musically we’re nothing like them,” added Pizzorno.

On the same subject, Pizzorno admitted he was surprised their third album, ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum‘, achieved the level of mainstream success that it enjoyed.

“With what we’re into, we shouldn’t really be as big as we are,” he said. “You shouldn’t get big off a concept record about madness where you’re dressed as a priest on the cover.”

Kasabian’s most recent UK number one album, ‘Velociraptor!‘, was released last September.
