BBC favourites Elbow have been chosen to soundtrack the station’s coverage of next summer’s Olympic Games.

The Lancashire band have written a six-minute song for the BBC, something which frontman Guy Garvey has described as “a real responsibility’, which will be used as the corporation’s theme throughout the London games.

“We are knocked out to be involved and it’s been quite a challenge,” Garvey told BBC News. “We have feelings of real responsibility as we will be the soundtrack to so many images of personal sacrifice and endeavour while the nation roots for and celebrates with Team GB.”

Elbow have a strong association with the BBC, with frontman Guy Garvey fronting a weekly show on 6Music, while the band also headlined a special gig at Manchester Cathedral recently for Radio 2‘s In Concert series.

According to reports, Elbow have already begun work on the follow up to their 2011 record ‘Build a Rocket Boys!‘, but have not yet indicated when the new LP is likely to be released.
