Elbow frontman Guy Garvey has said ‘he doesn’t get’ Nirvana during one of a series of interviews being conducted by Q Magazine as part of its 25th anniversary promotions.
When asked whether there is ‘a classic act or album from that last 25 years that leaves you cold?’, Garvey replied: “Nirvana. I don’t ******* get it. Kurt Cobain was angry and frustrated. And then he died. That’s terrible but I’m not sure about the music.”
“My problem with Nirvana is that even though he died and he wrote a lot of songs about being unhappy and frustrated it doesn’t quite ring true for me. It doesn’t quite validate those songs for me. I still don’t believe in them any more that I did.”
Elbow are due to play a special, one-off gig at the Manchester Cathedral later this month, when they will be joined by the Manchester-based Halle Youth Choir. The show will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2.
