Portishead‘s Geoff Barrow has confirmed he will begin writing material for a new album at the beginning of next year, but also admitted he is unsure when bandmates Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley will follow suit.

“I don’t know when Beth’s gonna start or when Adrian is gonna start, but I’m gonna get my head together for January basically to start writing,” he told Rolling Stone.

Portishead have released just two studio albums since landmark debut ‘Dummy‘ hit the shelves in 1994, and with that particular LP’s 20th anniversary on the horizon, Barrow has ruled out the possibility of the band following a growing trend of re-releases to mark the special occasion.

“I can’t see what use there is to release material that we didn’t think was worthy for the record,” he explained. “We never have much bonus material – it’s not like there’s me playing acoustic guitar and Beth singing on it for a song that didn’t make it, it doesn’t exist.”

After a wait of over 10 years, Portishead finally returned in 2008 with ‘Third‘.
