Everything Everything Surprised At Wild Beasts’ Mercury Prize Snub

Mercury-nominated acts Everything Everything and Metronomy have been reflecting on this year’s award ahead of tonight’s prize-giving ceremony.

Speaking to DJ and Fun Lovin’ Criminals mainman Huey Morgan today, Everything Everything have added their surprise at the omission of Wild Beasts, whose ‘Smother‘ album was widely tipped to emulate its predecessor ‘Two Dancers‘ with a Mercury nod, but missed out when the final shortlist was unveiled in July.

“We were definitely expecting Wild Beasts to be on the list,” said Jonathan Higgs. “We felt very lucky because there were a lot of bands that people assumed were shoo-ins who weren’t on the list,” added bandmate Jeremy Pritchard.

Meanwhile, Metronomy have been discussing the extra exposure which a nomination can provide bands with, something which apparently stretches way beyond UK shores.

“It’s been great. Because we’ve been touring so much, it’s given us this nice little extra push,” Joseph Mount told Huey. “The thing we’ve noticed is that people in other countries are interested in it, like in the States, South America and in European countries, we’ve been answering questions about it,” explained Gbenga Adelekan.

With PJ Harvey the long-term favourite, Metronomy could be a good outside bet to come out on top tonight, with their dreamy brand of electronica perfectly realised on ‘The English Riviera‘, which is already a big hit with critics.
