Kasabian guitarist and chief songwriter Serge Pizzorno has being telling The Sun of one of the more unusual inspirations used during the recording of their new album ‘Velociraptor!‘ – the classic cartoon series Tom & Jerry.

Pizzorno told the paper the distinctive background scores used on the Hanna-Barbera series provided a useful tool when the band worked to lay their ideas down while in the studio.

“I just explained what I wanted in basic terms like, ‘You know the bit in Tom and Jerry where Jerry plays Tom’s whiskers? – that sound’, and she’d go, ‘Ah, it’s pizzicato!’ and we’d get through it like that,” he said.

“The strings were recorded at British Grove Studios in West London with a 20-piece orchestra, which was a bit more complicated but I really enjoyed it.”

Later, Pizzorno also revealed how a period of little sleep helped to contribute to a ‘trippy’ feel which permeates the album.

“I was writing at night. I didn’t have a great deal of sleep, writing the record, and I think it must have helped,” he continued. “It’s quite a trippy feeling, sleep deprivation, and I’d wake up, hear things back and go, ‘I can’t remember doing that’ – it’s amazing.”

‘Velociraptor!’ is due for release on September 16th.
