Carl Barat has moved to deny weekend rumours which claimed a Libertines tour has been arranged for 2012.

One of the UK’s always-accurate tabloid ‘sources’ had been quoted in the Sunday Mirror yesterday (August 21st), as saying Barat and principal bandmate Pete Doherty were ready to return to the stage after a successful reunion at the Reading/Leeds festival almost exactly a year ago.

“Pete and Carl really enjoyed reforming the band last year for the Reading and Leeds festivals,” said the source. “Now Pete’s out of prison and trying to stay clean, getting the band back together is his main priority.”

“Fortunately Carl is open to the idea of touring and getting back to what they were famous for. So as long as Pete is relatively on the straight and narrow, the world is their oyster.”

However, Barat has taken to Twitter today to quell the speculation, simply saying: “So that ‘story’ in The Mirror yesterday? Complete fabrication, folks.”

A trouble-free run of gigs at Reading/Leeds 2010, which also included a warm-up show in London, had led to hopes of a more permanent return for the band, but they have yet to follow-up the festival appearances with any other public engagements.
