Outspoken Manic Street Preachers bassist Nicky Wire has said the Welsh band will play a UK date next year in order to avoid the planned celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Addressing the crowd during the Manics’ recent iTunes festival gig, Wire said the Queen’s 60th anniversary will interrupt their original plans to take a year off from touring following the release of ‘Postcards From a Young Man‘ last year.
“We were gonna take a year off from touring altogether next year, but we are gonna do one gig just to avoid the Diamond Jubilee,” Wire said. “I mean, how ******* saturated have we been with the Royal Family this year? So there’ll be one gig, just to avoid having to listen to Prince Philip for an hour.”
The iTunes festival takes place throughout July at London’s Roundhouse venue, with acts such as Beady Eye, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Kasabian due to perform this year.
