Clarence Clemons 880317282Music stars such as U2‘s Bono and Coldplay‘s Chris Martin have been leading the many tributes begin paid to The E Street Band‘s influential saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who sadly passed away last weekend after suffering an earlier stroke.

During U2’s gig at the Angel Stadium, California on Saturday night, frontman Bono asked the crowd to “…think about Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. I want you to think of Clarence Clemons. This man has carried music, and music carried him until this day.”

Coldplay’s Chris Martin took to the band’s official website to leave his own message of support, writing: “RIP our favourite saxophone player, Clarence ‘Big Man’ Clemons,” to an accompanying video the E Street Band’s ‘Jungleland‘.

Meanwhile, former Guns n Roses guitarist Slash used Twitter to lend his thoughts, writing: “Clarence Clemons was one of the finest musicians/people in this business. He will be sorely missed. RIP.”

Known by Bruce Springsteen simply as ‘Big Man’ and regarded as one of the integral cogs in the E Street machine, Clemons famously features with Springsteen on the ‘Born To Run‘ album cover; one of the most iconic sleeves in rock music.
