Stone Roses’ John Squire Labels Band Reunions As ‘Tragic’

John Squire has denounced the current trend for reunions as ‘tragic’, and has once again robustly denied any chance of The Stone Roses following in the footsteps of the likes of Pulp and Suede.

Speaking to Shortlist, Squire insisted he doesn’t take any satisfaction in the seemingly permanent clamour for a Roses reunion and poured scorn on certain contemporaries who have decided to do so, but did admit to enjoying Led Zeppelin‘s 2007 gig in honour of the late Ahmet Ertegun.

“I don’t see these rumours as special or flattering,” he said. “It’s a symptom of the times. People who can afford to waste money on gigs now are of a certain age and The Stone Roses fit their brief.”

“I went to see what’s left of Led Zeppelin recently and really enjoyed that. But I’m not as interested in Britpop. I’d suggest that those bands don’t bother. When it’s just a get-together for a big payday and everyone gets their old clothes out, that seems tragic to me.”

While on the most recent of the ‘Stone Roses reuniting’ mumblings, which surfaced after the four ex-bandmates got together and bassist Mani‘s mother’s funeral, Squire remarked: “Mani sat on them this time. It was his turn! They only started because we were all at his mum’s funeral – that’s what pissed him off, I’m sure.”

John Squire is to unveil a series of unique portraits of various celebrities at a forthcoming London art exhibition.
