Original lyrics for some of Bob Dylan‘s classic 1960′s output have been recently discovered and are to be put up for auction at Christie’s later this month.
Reuters reports hand-written and typed lyrics for Dylan’s signature 60s tune ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues‘, the sublime ‘Visions Of Johanna‘ and ‘Bringing It All Back Home‘s ‘Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream‘ and ‘Maggie’s Farm‘ are expected to generate thousands of dollars at the auction, with the latter alone estimated to be worth around $70-90,000.
The lyrics offer a window on an important turning point in Dylan’s career, as he began to embrace a new electric sound, courting controversy in the folk world as he did so. On the subject, Christie’s Chris Coover remarks:
“The mid ’60s, especially 1964-1966, were a true watershed for Dylan. In that period his lyrics became deeper and more personal, while his songs moved away from the acoustic, folk-inflected style, and he forged a unique personal style as poet and songwriter.”
The auction will take place on June 23rd.
