Arctic Monkeys have defended the artwork for new album ‘Suck It and See‘, whose minimalist approach received a mixed response from both fans and critics alike.

The sleeve, which merely consists of the album’s title against a white background, has been described as ‘pretty good’ by the Sheffield band’s guitarist Jamie Cook.

“We honestly thought it were pretty good,” he told NME. “We really would’ve wound people up with some on the other ideas we had, if we’d wanted to.”

For his part, drummer Matt Helders said the artwork was also conceived as a way to try persuade buyers to purchase a physical copy of the record, rather than following the ever-dominating download option.

“It’s like they think too much about it, almost,” Helders explained. “It’ll make sense if you buy the actual album, because there is something to look at inside it. That’s why we did it really – it’ll look crap on an iPod screen. We want people to buy the physical product, and we thought it looked good. It looks nice.”

Arctic Monkeys will play the last of two dates at the Sheffield Don Valley Bowl tonight.
