Muse plan to start work on a new album once the summer festival season has been completed.

Speaking to NME at yesterday’s Ivor Novello Awards ceremony, where they picked up the prize for International Achievement, the band’s bass player Chris Wolstenholme confirmed they will head back into the studio following a short break at the end of the summer.

“We’ve got Reading Festival in August and maybe a few weeks off after that,” he said. “So September, October time we’ll get into the studio and start writing and working on the songs.”

Drummer Dominic Howard was cagey on a potential release date for the record, but did predict a more softer sound than past efforts.

“It takes as long as it takes really, because you have to love it before you can just chuck it out there and into the real world. But definitely next year,” he explained. “Matt showed me a few chords recently. Who knows, it might be softer rock, but then it’s up to me and Chris to make it heavy again. A heavy rock lullaby! But I’m sure it will move forward in some way.”

The new LP will be the band’s first since 2009′s ‘The Resistance‘.
