As the media build up goes into overdrive this week ahead of Friday’s royal wedding, one man who has rather unsurprisingly said he won’t be tuning in is former Smiths frontman Morrissey.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5Live, Morrissey described the Royal Family as ‘benefit scroungers’, and claimed most people are uninterested in the impending ceremony, despite the constant coverage.

“Why would I watch the wedding? Why would I watch it?” he said. “I couldn’t take any of that seriously. I don’t think the so-called royal family speak for England now and I don’t think England needs them. I do seriously believe that they are benefit scroungers and nothing else. I don’t believe they serve any purpose whatsoever.”

“The press reports from Buckingham Palace tell you that people love them, but go out now and speak to people on the street and they will laugh at you. They really will.”

Morrissey has recently confirmed the completion of his much-anticipated autobiography, which he now says is in the ‘re-drafting, trimming stage’ and hopes to have it released within the year.
