Iconic Sonic Youth, Nirvana Tour Film Set For DVD Re-Release

Sonic+YouthAn iconic 1991 tour documentary featuring Sonic Youth being supported throughout Europe by Nirvana is set to be re-released as a DVD, according to original director Dave Markey.

Entitled 1991: The Year Punk Broke, the film also features Dinosaur Jr., the Ramones, Babes In Toyland and Gumball amongst others. Now, director Markey has said Universal Music is looking into releasing a special, extended 20th anniversary edition on DVD sometime this year.

The new package is expected to be packed with bonuses, including a 42-minute film called (This Is Known As) The Blues Scale, featuring previously unseen Sonic Youth and Nirvana performances, footage of a 2003 discussion with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, and feature-length commentary from Markey and Moore.

The original film was dedicated to roadie Joe Cole, who was killed just a few months after the completion of the now legendary tour.

As yet, no release date has been confirmed for the DVD.
