Arctic Monkeys Want a New Band To ‘Turn Charts Upside Down’

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has said he hopes a new band can mirror his own band’s almost instantaneous commercial success, and in doing so ‘turn the charts upside down’.

When nearly a year of industry hype and intrigue came to head with the release of their first full single ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor‘ in October 2005, Arctic Monkeys began a period of chart success not enjoyed by a British band since Oasis, with ‘…Dancefloor‘, second single ‘When The Sun Goes Down‘ and debut album ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not‘ all reaching the top spot in the UK.

Now, Turner has said he is looking for a new band to match their own early achievements, at a time when most British guitar acts struggle to make waves in the higher reaches of the UK charts. “Everyone thinks that the next big thing has got to sound really modern and new, but to get something that sounds fresh, it can just be three kids with guitars and not a lot else,” he said.”There’s enough username-and-password music already, know what I mean? I hope it does happen again, though.”

“Because we’ll never get that initial naivety back, you can’t, like, fake that thing, like what’s on the first record. It’s just a time and a place, but yeah, I’d love for a band to come through and turn the charts upside down for a couple of weeks.”

Arctic Monkeys will release fourth album ‘Suck It and See‘ on June 6th.
