Carl Barat: No Libertines Shows This Year

Carl Barat has moved to put an end to speculation surrounding The Libertines‘ immediate future today, confirming that the band have no plans to follow up their successful 2010 reunion shows with any dates this year.

Recent reports of a new deal signed between Barat and investment firm Power Amp had fuelled speculation The Libertines were about to hit the road again, with Power Amp’s chief executive Tom Bywater quoted as saying the deal would include a ‘meaningful amount from Libertines gigs’.

However, in an email sent out to fans today, Barat has said the group will not entertain the idea of touring again until they have new material to play – something which is unlikely to materialise in 2011 due to the members’ conflicting schedules.

“Just to quell any speculation, there will not be any Libertines shows this summer,” he wrote. “As perfect as last year was, Peter and I have not written anything new together at this point.”

“We are all busy doing very different things separately. Truly moving as it was to play Reading, Leeds and the Forum it would not be right to do this every year without new material as I’m sure most would agree. You never know though, some day I hope we’ll write the next album.”

Fans will be able to catch Carl Barat on his upcoming solo UK tour, which is due to begin in Brighton on March 29th.
