30: Little Comets – Isles
A change of pace from the North East four-piece as they turn away from their highly-charged early singles to take a more low-key view on the UK without compromising any of the initial promise.
29: Karen Elson – The Ghost Who Walks
Taken from the singer-songwriter’s debut album of the same name, which was produced by Karen’s partner Jack White, who also directed the single’s video.
28: The Twilight Sad – The Room
The third single from the group’s second studio album, ‘The Room’ shines a light on the earnest power of one of the UK’s most underrated bands.
27: Hot Chip – One Life Stand
Underneath the dance-fuelled sound, there’s a core of classic British songwriting at the heart of Hot Chip, never more apparent than on this track, released with the album in February.
26: Goodnight Loving – The Pan
Must be the only single of 2010 which is written from the perspective of a fish, this is a joyful three minutes of pop which should have They Might Be Giants looking on in envy.
25: Young Rebel Set – Borders
Very much a band with a narrative, Young Rebel Set have enjoyed favourable comparisons with Bruce Springsteen this year thanks to the social awareness displayed on tracks including this early single.
24: Chapel Club – All The Eastern Girls
Announcing themselves with a single borrowed from ‘Dream a Little Dream Of Me’, Chapel Club stood out in their own right with this impressive track which makes them a band to watch closely in 2011.
23: Frankie & The Heartstrings – Ungrateful
Despite the now all-too-familiar structure of their name, ‘Ungrateful’ comfortably pushes Frankie & The Heartstrings above the plethora of disposable indie music of the moment.
22: Twin Atlantic – Human After All
“Twin Atlantic will certainly be leaving a trail of appreciative audiences in their wake,” said Live4ever of the Glasgow rockers who released this highly-charged single back in May.
21: Belle & Sebastian – Write About Love
One of the UK’s most consistent acts, Belle & Sebastian continue to churn out singalong, under-stated classics nearly 15 years since their debut.
