Figures recently released by Apple show The Beatles have sold over 2 million downloads since their back catalogue was finally made available for purchase on iTunes last week.

A deal was eventually struck last week between the owners of The Beatles’ music and Apple, who were said to have beaten off tough competition from other major outlets to secure the coveted agreement.

The statistics show the band have sold more than 2m tracks and 450,000 albums digitally. The George Harrison-penned ‘Here Comes The Sun‘, which featured on The Beatles’ swansong ‘Abbey Road‘, has proved to be the most popular song in the US so far, while the record itself has been the top album.

The volume of downloads appears to justify the hype which surrounded the contract agreement, afterwhich Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs said: “It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to The Beatles and EMI, we are now realising a dream we’ve had since we launched iTunes 10 years ago.”

Despite the impressive figures, a widely anticiapted ‘take over’ of the British charts failed to materialise on Sunday, with only ‘Hey Jude‘ reaching the top 40 on the UK Singles chart, while The Beatles’ seminal compliation albums popularly known as ‘The Red Album‘ and ‘The Blue Album‘, were the only LP’s to trouble the Album chart in the UK, entering at #33 and #32 respectively.
