He was once held up with his Sex Pistols bandmates as the ultimate anti-establishment icon, but now John Lydon has given nothing but praise to the current Prince William and his new fiancee Kate Middleton, describing their relationship as a ‘beautiful love story’.

Writing in The Sun newspaper, Lydon described his own very British way of celebrating the news of the royal engagement. “When I heard William had popped the question to Kate, I had a nice cup of tea for them,” he said. “Later on, I might even put some Buck’s Fizz in my veins in their honour. This is a beautiful love story and I like that. He’s done very well for himself – she’s bang on the money! He got the No.1 contender.”

The Sex Pistols courted huge controversy in the UK back in 1977, when the Lydon-penned single ‘God Save The Queen‘ topped the charts (though unofficially of course) during the week of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. The anti-monarchy tone of the track sparked widespread anger at the time, but Lydon has insisted the message in the song was intended towards the institution, not the individuals. “People think I hate the Royal Family, but that’s not true,” he clarified.

“My animosity is towards the institution, not the people themselves. What I’ve always resented with the Royals was the austere nonsense that was being propagated.”

John Lydon has a new book entitled ‘Mr Rotten’s Scrapbook’ available for pre-order at johnlydon.com.
